Under the direction of the Area Fish and Wildlife Manager and the EIA Wildlife Specialist, the Intern will be responsible for assisting in the review of and regulatory response to environmental assessments in the Waterways/Lac La Biche Area. The position operates within the legislation/guidelines related to the environmental regulatory process in cooperation with other provincial departments and federal agencies. Acquiring and using expertise in terrestrial biology and wildlife management, the successful candidate will assist the department to understand the potential impact of large-scale oil sands developments, communicate issues to department officials and regulatory boards, and design and implement strategies to address issues of concern. The intern will work with Area Wildlife Biologists to ensure that area issues are accounted for in environmental impact assessment reviews and that SRD responses with regard to impact assessments are consistent with area wildlife management goals and provincial policy. The individual will be exposed to various components of the Department's organizational structure, as well as its strategies, policies and processes, and will participate on multi-stakeholder committees working to establish acceptable solutions for regional-scale issues related to fish and wildlife resources and ecosystem sustainability. The intern will also have the opportunity to assist Area Fish and Wildlife biologists with fish and wildlife population and habitat inventories and assessments.



The successful candidate must be well-organized and possess strong communication and interpersonal skills in order to deal effectively with stakeholders, clients and department staff. You must have the ability to work effectively in a team setting as well as work independently.

Qualifications: Completion of a biology or related degree within the last 2 years. Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge or experience in biodiversity, wildlife modeling and/or the Environmental Impact Assessment process. A valid Class 5 drivers license is required.


Note: This is a 12 month temporary salary position. Final candidates will be required to undergo a security screening.
